Solid Waste Operations
The Public Works and Transportation Department provides Solid Waste Operations support with the management of the Loyalton Transfer Station, Ramshorn Transfer Station, Alleghany Transfer Station, Sierra City Transfer Station, and the Sattley Transfer Station. This support includes the development and management of Sierra County recycling programs including but not limited to E-waste, aluminum, white goods, metals, used oil products, cardboard, CRV plastics, and mattresses (available at Ramshorn and Loyalton).
The department is also responsible for the preparation and updating of all required reporting to the State of California.
The following Sierra County Solid Waste sites are open as noted except for holidays. Please call for holiday confirmation.

*Please note that the Sierra City Transfer site now has Starlink internet. This should be used in case of emergency or to report an incident.
All Sierra County Solid Waste Sites are closed for the following holidays:
- New Year's Day (January 1)
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Third Monday in January)
- Lincoln's Birthday (Second Monday in February)
- Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day - Third Monday in February)
- Easter Sunday
- Memorial Day (Last Monday in May)
- Independence Day (July 4)
- Labor Day (First Monday in September)
- Admissions Day (September 9)
- Veterans' Day (November 11)
- Thanksgiving Day and Friday Following (Fourth Thursday and Friday in November)
- Christmas Eve (December 24)
- Christmas Day (December 25)
Please note that the day and date of the observance of the holidays can change from year to year depending on the day of the week on which the County holiday falls. Please contact Sierra County Department of Public Works at 530-289-3201 to make inquiries or gain clarification on holiday closures.
