Notice of Data Incident
On or about February 21, 2023 Sierra County (“County”) was the victim of a sophisticated cybersecurity attack (the “Incident”). The County became aware of the Incident on or about March 6, 2023 and with assistance from third-party experts, we took immediate steps to secure our systems and investigate the nature and scope of the Incident. As part of our extensive investigation, we have been working diligently to identify any personally identifiable information (“PII”) that may have been subject to unauthorized access or acquisition as a result of the Incident. We have concluded our investigation and determined the Incident may have impacted certain PII we maintain including name, address, date of birth, email, phone number, Social Security number, driver’s license or government ID number, medical/prescription or health insurance related information, drug or alcohol screening results, date of birth, credit or debit card number, biometric data, financial account/routing number. However, we have not found any evidence that this information has been used to commit fraud or identity theft.
Out of an abundance of caution, and in accordance with applicable law, the County provided notice of this Incident on or about November 22, 2023 to potentially impacted individuals using available contact information. As with any cybersecurity incident, you may wish to take precautionary steps to protect your personal information including contacting the nationwide credit-reporting agencies
(Credit Report Services | Equifax®, Consumer Assistance at Experian, Credit Score Help | Credit Report Help | TransUnion) to add a fraud alert to your credit file; place a security freeze or your credit accounts; or review a free copy of your credit report available at www.annualcreditreport.com. You can obtain additional information on identity theft from the FTC by visiting www.ftc.gov, www.consumer.gov/idtheft, or by calling (877) 438-4338.
The County endeavors to treat all personal information in a confidential manner.
